The History of Perry Cabin

The Inn at Perry Cabin, nestled in the charming town of St. Michaels, Maryland, holds nearly two-and-a-half centuries of fascinating history. Originally constructed around 1815, the manor was designed by Samuel Hambleton, a decorated Navy purser and aide to Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry during the War of 1812. Hambleton built the north wing, reflecting Commodore Perry’s flagship, the Niagara, which inspired the name Perry Cabin. Today, the inn stands as a symbol of refined elegance, rich heritage, and unrivaled hospitality.

The Manor’s Journey Through Time

Starting as the colonial estate "Davenport," the property has undergone numerous transformations—from a plantation and riding academy to an intimate Perry Inn and now a luxurious 5-star hotel. In 1926, Charles Fogg, a coal baron, modernized the manor with stunning Federal and Greek Revival architecture, including the iconic columned portico that greets visitors. The property’s long-standing connection with the Watkins family further enriched its legacy, including its brief life as a riding academy.

In the 1980s, the Meyerhoff family turned the property into a cozy 6-bedroom inn and restaurant that charmed locals and visitors alike. English industrialist Sir Bernard Ashley elevated Perry Cabin further by introducing fine dining and renovations that added rooms and unique features like The Commodore’s Room. In 1999, Orient Express added the Crescent Suites, expanding the inn’s capacity and luxury offerings, including the serene Perry Cabin spa and fitness center, completed in 2007.
